Village guard’s gun used during murder of father and daughter

It has been revealed that a village guard’s gun was used in the killing of a father and his daughter in the Çermik district of Diyarbakır (Amed).

Nine months after the incident, the indictment was prepared for seven defendants who fell into a dispute with the Özkahraman family due to a mukhtar election (local election for street administration) held in the Konuksever Street of the Çermik district in Diyarbakır. Selahattin Özkahraman and his pregnant daughter Suriye Özkahraman were killed on 17 March. Four people related to the incident are jailed pending trial, while two more are fugitives.

According to a Mesopotamia Agency report, Diyarbakır’s 7th High Penal Court approved the indictment of fugitive defendants Emre and Engin Yalçın, arrested defendants Remzi, Hayrettin, Şeyhmus, Ferit Yalçın and another defendant, Birgül Menteş. The prosecutor demands two aggravated life sentence for six defendants on the charge of deliberate killing and a prison sentence for the remaining defendant on the charge of assisting a deliberate killing.

According to the indictment, the arrested suspect Hayrettin Yalçın demanded Selahattin Özkahraman vote for the mukhtar canditate Emre Yalçın. Özkahraman refused. After Emre Yalçın lost the election, the dispute between families began. The Özkahraman family migrated to Mersin due to the dispute and paid a visit to the village before the incident. However, the Yalçın family threated them to not come to the village.

When Özkahraman and his daughter returned to the village, Remzi Yalçın began to shoot the father and daughter. The perpetrators ran away after the incident. According to the indictment, Remzi Yalçın used a village guard gun.

The court has postponed the hearing to 14 December.
