US Elections – Latest update

As the counts continue, Jo Biden currently holds 264 electoral college votes, with Donald Trump on 214. Either party needs 270 votes to secure the presidency.

The Guardian reports that there are five key states where votes haven’t been fully counted or declared – Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nevada and Alaska. Whilst there are just 1% of votes left to count in Georgia, the percentages respectively for Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nevada and Alaska are 3%, 6%, 16% and 50%. In Georgia, the current leading candidate is Biden with a 917 vote margin but 1% of votes are still to be counted.

As reported by the BBC, President Trump yesterday claimed electoral fraud, as the counts were underway: “If you count the legal votes, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes they can try to steal the election from us. We were winning in all the key locations, by a lot actually, and then our numbers started getting miraculously whittled away in secret and they wouldn’t allow legally permissible observers. There’s been a lot of shenanigans and we can’t stand for that in our country”. The i newspaper this morning reported President Trump as being in “meltdown” as he launched “last-ditch lawsuits”.

Mr Biden appealed for calm and confidently stated, in a televised address, that he would be declared the winner: “Democracy is sometimes messy. It sometimes requires a little patience as well”.
