UK delegation meets co-chairs of the Foreign Relations Commission in North Syria

The delegation led by Martin Longden, the UK’s Special Envoy to Syria, visited Syria on 16 September. They met with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria.

The British delegation was welcomed at the Sêmalka border by co-chairs of the Foreign Relations Commission in North Syria, Dr Abdulkarim Omar and Daniya Ramazan. The chair of the Women’s Committee, Zeynep Saroxan, was also there to greet them.

During an hour long closed meeting, they discussed matters relating to the struggle against ISIS and problems encountered in responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

After the meeting, Abdulkarim Omar spoke to ANHA and stated they were pleased to meet with the delegation: “Britain plays an important role in the international coalition against ISIS. Along with this, Britain also plays an important role regarding a solution to the Syrian crisis, according to international resolutions”.

He noted that “the Autonomous Administration agreed with the British delegation that the Syrian crisis had to be solved by democratic and peaceful methods and with the involvement of all population groups”.

After the meeting, a four-year-old orphan of an ISIS fanatic who was a British citizen joined the delegation. She will travel with the delegation back to the UK.
