Among 175,497 academics, 96,110 are men and 79,387 are women, according to data obtained from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).

Thirteen universities in Turkey have no female professors. While women hold more than 50 percent of research assistant and lecturer posts, women make up less than a third of professors.

Female professors outnumber male in only five universities, and in two universities the numbers are equal. In all other universities the number of male professors exceeds the number of female professors.

In a new “Academic Freedom Report” it shown that sexism and gender discrimination occurs in various forms in academia across Turkey. The report states that,

“Sexist attitudes appear in the form of ignoring or not punishing male perpetrators. Gender-based discriminatory attitudes such as impunity, rewarding the male perpetrator while the investigation is continuing, and also victim-blaming are among other examples of such attitudes”.
