Turkey: 164 deaths from workplace related incidents in July alone

Health and Safety Labour Watch (İSİG) has reported that 164 workers, including 7 children, died in workplace related incidents in July 2020.

According to the report, at least 164 workers (comprising 161 males and 3 females) lost their lives in work-related incidents in July.

Seven children died whilst labouring in the agriculture, textile and trade sectors.

24 farmers and shopkeepers also died.

The women who died were working in the agricultural, chemistry and medical sectors.

İSİG confirmed that six refugees (including five Syrians and one Afghan) were also among the workers who lost their lives in July.

Only seven of the 164 workers who died were unionized.

Workplace deaths, reported İSİG, mainly occur in the agriculture, construction, transportation, chemicals, metals, mining, energy, municipal/general affairs, food, health, security, textile and trade/office sectors.

The highest number of workplace recorded deaths occurred in Sakarya, Istanbul, Bursa and Kocaeli.
