The Weeping Rocks: a symbol of sorrows in Tunceli

The Weeping Rocks, located in Pülümür Valley in the city of Tunceli (Dersim) in Turkey, symbolize the sorrows of residents in the region from past to present.

These rocks have been the voiceless witnesses of the 1937-1938 Dersim Massacres (which have been categorised as a ‘genocide’ by the scholar Ismail Beşikçi and others). Some wonder if they derived their name from these events.

Located on the road to Tunceli Pülümür Valley, the Weeping Rocks present an awesome spectacle. To many, they are beyond comparison and are a remarkable sight in all seasons. The water flows from several springs and falls 20 metres, attracting many nature lovers from various districts and cities throughout Turkey.

The Weeping Rocks have a significant cultural and natural significance for the residents of the region. They could be accessed more easily after the construction of a main road during the 1960’s. The rocks have been so named after the sorrows that residents in the region have faced. People living in the region state that the Weeping Rocks symbolize the sorrows that the people of the region have faced from past to present.
