PKK Central Executive Committee member Duran Kalkan interviewed

Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) Central Executive Committee member, Duran Kalkan, commented on the current political situation. He stated that the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) and the People’s Will Party suggested a way forward towards a solution in Syria. He draws attention to relationships between Arabs and Kurds in the Middle East and also commented on recent attacks that have taken place against Kurdish workers in Turkey.

Assaults against Kurdish workers

Several attacks in different cities of Turkey have taken place against Kurdish migrant workers in recent weeks. These types of attacks have also been reported over the years. Kalkan asked why Kurdish people are made to travel to different places to work in Turkey. He added that people should be more organised and begin to think about how they can make a living in Kurdistan.

Solution in Syria

In terms of the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) and the People’s Will Party’s agreement that was signed in Moscow on 5 September, he indicated that this approach represented a way forward towards realising a ‘solution’ to the crisis facing Syria.

Kalkan drew attention to the importance of the relationships between Kurds and Arabs in the Middle East. They will play a historic, democratic and patriotic role in the region, he noted, adding: “We, the PKK, attach great importance to this”.

“We consider these to be the main relationships which will form the new Middle East”.

The problem is not a problem of a dispute between the PKK and KDP

Kalkan commented on the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) attitude towards Turkey’s recent military offensives in the region. As tensions have mounted between the KDP and the PKK, Kalkan pointed out that the problem in the region is not just one relating to a simple dispute between the KDP and the PKK. The problem relates to the matter of achieving Kurdish democracy and Kurdish national unity.

The last campaign

With regard to the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) “Stop Isolation, Fascism, Occupation: Time to Achieve Freedom” initiative that was launched on 12 September,
Kalkan stated that the campaign will struggle against the AKP-MHP alliance which represents a continuation of the 1980 coup regime. He added: “It is time to achieve freedom”.
