Nadira Dermuş from Afrin in north east Syria was reportedly kidnapped by Turkish-backed Sultan Murad mercenaries on the orders of the Turkish intelligence service MIT. She was murdered and her body was found near the location of the mercenaries.
Dermuş was from the Arab tribe al-Umayrat and had been kidnapped – as reported by the Afrin Human Rights Organization – for working for the Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria (AANES). The Afrin province of north east Syria has been under the control of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed groups since 18 March 2018.
Turkey has not taken responsibility for any human rights violations in the region. Violations against women in Afrin are at an all-time high and war crimes including torture, executions, harassment and ransoms (tied to kidnappings) have been documented in international reports for the region. Nearly a thousand women have reportedly been abducted in the city in the past two years and the fate of 400 women remains ‘unknown’. Many women in the region have been murdered.
