Law proposal to make Kurdish ‘the language of education’

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Diyarbakır (Amed) deputy İmam Taşçıer has presented a law proposal to parliament to make Kurdish (Kurmanji-Zazaki) a language of education.

The Kurdish language currently does not have any legal status in Turkey and Taşçıer stated in his proposal that Turkey is a multi-cultural country where many different languages are spoken. However, languages other than Turkish are prohibited and do not have any legal status since the beginning of the Turkish Republic.

He insisted on the importance of the native language being the language of education and stated that: “Language is more than just a communication tool. Each language is the carrier of the history and culture of the society speaking that language. Having the right to be educated in your native language is a basic requirement for a democratic state and a democratic society”.
