Hunger strikes by political prisoners in Turkey are taking place in protest against the prison isolation conditions of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan and the human rights violations that are taking place in Turkey’s prisons. Prisoners began their hunger strike on 27 November 2020 and continue to organise the hunger strikes on a five-day rotational basis.
The hunger strikes have reached their 25th day with the fifth group going on hunger strike. The hunger strike is spreading across the prisons in Turkey. People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Ağrı (Agıri) Provincial Co-Chair Cemal Akar spoke to Mesopotamia News Agency about the ongoing strikes and demands of the prisoners.
“We believe that the hunger strikes will bring about a very important result for ending the isolation. We support the hunger strikes and we respect the struggle of the friends in prisons”, said Akar. He added that the struggle should not be limited only to the prisons: “We hope that all democrats will support this. We expect that not only the HDP but all other opposition groups will also support the struggle in the prisons”, he said.
