Global coronavirus cases exceed 40 million

Global coronavirus cases have exceeded 40 million, according to official figures.

The number of global deaths has passed one million and the number of active cases worldwide is approaching nine million. In Turkey the number of coronavirus deaths stands at 9,296, while the total number of coronavirus infections is 347,493.

The Turkish Medical Association (TTB) announced on Twitter that five healthcare workers died of coronavirus in one day.

Covid-19 has spread around the world since first being recorded in China at the end of 2019. A tally by Johns Hopkins University confirms that global coronavirus infections have just passed 40 million cases.

European governments are struggling to contain the spread of Covid-19 and demonstrations against strict coronavirus restrictions have in some cases turned violent, according to the Guardian.

As European countries fight to slow down the virus, tougher restrictions are being implemented. In Switzerland mandatory mask-wearing indoors has come into force, while Ireland is preparing to announce new restrictions. In the Czech Republic anti-mask protestors fought with police.
