Father of prime suspect in Gülistan Doku case suspended from duty

Policeman Engin Y., the father of Zainal Abarakov, the prime suspect in the case of Gülistan Doku’s disappearance, has been suspended from duty.

Muznur University student Gülistan Doku has been missing since 5 January. Doku’s family filed a criminal complaint about the prime suspect Zainal Abrakov’s father Engin Y., accusing him of obtaining and releasing Gülistan Doku’s personal information unlawfully, recording personal data unlawfully and committing the crime as a public official.

The 2nd Penal Court of the First Instance filed a criminal case against Engin Y. over the same accusations from the Tunceli (Dersim) Chief Prosecutor’s Office. It was reportedly said that Engin Y. was suspended from duty on the grouds of “sharing Doku’s information on social media” during an investigation launched by the association in which he worked.

Doku’s family lawyer, Ali Çimen, stated that the Tunceli Chief Prosecutor’s Office had affirmed their theory in the context of an investigation for the first time. Çimen said, “It has been revealed thanks to this development how the suspect’s family used their public official status to create a perception in the public that Gülistan Doku committed suicide”.

Stating that the development raised many questions, Çimen said, “Why are the suspects committing such a crime? Why is the incident forcibly pushing those people to commit crime? Why are the suspects aiming to make people think that Gülistan committed suicide? All answers to these questions will be revealed only through an effective investigation”.

Second suspension

This is not the first time Engin has been suspended. Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP) Tunceli (Dersim) deputy Polat Şaroğlu announced on 8 August that Engin was suspended from duty as part of a prior investigation. Meanwhile the current investigation into Engin Y. continues.

Doku missing since 5 January

University student Gülistan Doku disappeared on 5 January in Tunceli (Dersim).

Despite the efforts and insistence of her family and women’s organisations, the search has been terminated several times. Her family and lawyer argued that the investigation into her disappearance has been “incomplete and inaccurate” from the very beginning, so no progress had been made.

Aygül Doku, the sister of Gülistan Doku, was fined 50,000 Turkish lira after being accused of preventing the main suspect from moving home.
