Muhammed Emir died after being infected with Covid-19 in prison

Muhammed Emir (57), who was imprisoned in the Maraş Elbistan E-type closed prison, has lost his life after being infected with Covid-19. The virus has spread through the whole prison and all prisoners are now under quarantine.

Bekir Kara, the custodian of Emir, said that two undercover policemen came to him yesterday and told him that Emir had lost his life. Emir, imprisoned on suspicion of “membership of an organisation”, was from the city of Efrin in northern Syria. His family is reportedly abroad.

Emir died after being taken to Public District Hospital in Elbistan on 2 October. His body was buried in the cemetery of the nameless in Istanbul yesterday.

According to a Mesopotamia News report, prisoner Erdal Laçin told his relatives over the phone that several prisoners were infected and the outbreak had spread in the prison.

He also added that all prisoners were put in quarantine and the required treatments were not provided. Laçin warned that lots of prisoner might lose their lives and said that the prison administration had previously told them that Emir was not ill. Lastly, Laçin called for everyone to be aware of the situation of prisoners in pandemic conditions.

Another prisoner, Salih Şimşek, mentioned the spread of the virus to his father, Behçet. According to Behçet, they were concerned for the prisoners and demanded that the prisoners be treated. He added that his son told him the outbreak had spread through the whole prison.
