Earthquake in İzmir, Turkey

An earthquake took place in the city of İzmir in Turkey. According to the latest information provided by the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), four people have lost their lives and 120 people have been injured. Aftershocks continue.

An intense earthquake took place in Aegan Sea at 14:51. AFAD announced that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.6 and the epicentre of the earthquake was off the coast of Seferihisar district of İzmir.

Kandilli Observatory shared its data that suggested that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.8.

The earthquake tremors were felt in cities around İzmir and also in İstanbul.

Several buildings reportedly collapsed in the Bayraklı and Buca districts of İzmir and many more were damaged.

Murat Kurum, the Minister of Environment and Urbanisation, stated that there were several people still trapped under the wreckage.

İzmir’s Metropolitan Municipality chair Tunç Soyer also issued a statement in which he described 20 houses as having collapsed.

AFAD advised people to avoid entering any damaged buildings.

According to AFAD, search and rescue teams and first aid teams had been deployed to the region.

In addition, staff and vehicles from nearby cities have also been deployed to the city to assist where possible in the search and rescue operations.

According to the latest data shared by AFAD, four people lost their lives, over 120 injured.

İzmir’s governor stated that 70 people had been rescued from the wreckage.
