Cultural appropriation of Kurdish music in Turkey as part of assimilation politics

Thousands of Kurdish songs are translated to Turkish without any permission from the creators of the songs. They were published as if they are initially in Turkish. Koma Wetan’s music “Cahiltî” is one of these.

The song was translated to Turkish and covered by a Turkish singer Serdar Ortaç in 1999 without permission from the song owner. However, the real story of the piece revealed, and the singer had to confess it.
