CHP deputy releases a human rights report on Turkey

The Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP) deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu has released a report on the violation of human rights that occurred in Turkey in September. According to the report, there were 238 violations of the ‘right to live’ and 255 cases of reported ‘torture’.

Sixteen of the 238 violations were femicides, three related to deaths in jail, one person died through torture and another violation occurred when a person ‘disobeyed a stop warning’.

The ‘Torture and Mistreatments in Prison’ section in the report details 105 violations that took place in prisons and the ‘Torture’ section provides details of 150 violations, including five violations against children.

Regarding the ‘freedom of speech’ section, 238 violations were identified and seven journalists were detained. Two journalists were arrested and eight received imprisonment sentences and fines. Six journalists were sued and indicted. Two journalists were assaulted.

In the section relating to ‘publications and broadcasting’, 173 violations were identified. In the ‘detained and arrested executives of parties and organizations’ section of the report, 23 violations were identified, with five executives being sued. The number of organizations, trade unions or associations which were shut down was listed as one.

There were two raids on the buildings of organizations. Fourteen events were banned and 33 press statements and events were subjected to attack. The report confirmed that 111 people were detained or arrested whilst issuing press statements or taking part in protests.
