Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) released a statement regarding the court’s decision that Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair, Leyla Güven be sentenced to 22 years 6 months in prison.
HDP defined the decision as ‘a hostile law’ and pointed out that HDP and Güven would never give up struggling for rights.
The statement is as follows:
“The decision that has sentenced DTK co-chair Leyla Güven, whose status as an MP was removed last year by an unlawful decision and is our MP, elected for Hakkari (Colemêrg), to 22 years, 6 months in prison is a result of a ‘hostile law’.”
The statement continues: “With this decision, the judicial organs have indicated, yet again, that they operate in favour of the ruling party. This hostile decision is not only directed towards Leyla Güven or DTK, but also against all Kurds and all opposition. Leyla Güven is a person who dedicated her whole life to peace and is a person of honour. Neither Leyla Güven nor we will give up our struggle due to penalties or arrests.”
The HDP statement concluded, “Democratic Society Congress, whose co-chair is Leyla Güven, is a civil and democratic association that has played a critical role for these lands to gain peace. DTK was formed as a result of efforts of democratic negotiations seeking political and peaceful solutions. The ruling party have now indicated one more time that they rather choose deadlock.
Criminalising an association such as DTK with these methods is like flogging a dead horse. This has been tried dozens of times before recently and the result was always the same. All attacks against Kurd’s struggle for rights and peace has been always responded against.We do not recognise this unlawful and hostile decision.” The HDP statement ended.
