From Kurdish organisations to European Union: Impose sanctions on Turkey

European Union leaders are discussing relations with Turkey at their summit in Brussels on 10th and 11th December. The EU is discussing whether to impose sanctions against Turkey for its actions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Dozens of Kurdish parties and organizations published a written statement calling on the EU to also discuss war crimes and human rights violations committed by Turkey against the Kurdish people.

“We call on the European Union summit, held on Human Rights Day, instituted by the United Nations, to raise the issue of crimes committed by the Turkish state against the Kurdish people and to take appropriate action to sanction Turkey for these crimes.” they said.

The Kurdish organizations reminded the EU of the human rights violations Turkey has carried out in Syria, Turkey and Iraq.

“After the occupation of Afrin and Northern Syria, torture, rape, looting and kidnappings began and the local people were persecuted. By not imposing any sanctions will mean rewarding Turkey for these crimes. ” it stated.

They also reminded the EU of the oppressive politics of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) coalition in Turkey and Kurdish politicians being arrested and also added information regarding the trustees appointed to the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) local councils. The statement ended with calling to EU leaders: “This is why the leadership of the European Union, which has ignored the crimes committed by the Turkish state against the Kurdish people for many years, should take a look at these reports and act in accordance with the founding objectives of the Union. We call for human rights, fundamental freedoms, and democracy.”
