Peace Mothers released after nine days in custody in Turkey

The Peace Mothers Fatma Akbaş, Hadiye Oğur, Adalet Çay and Meyaser Korkmaz were detained after a house raid in the city of Şanlıurfa (Riha) in Turkey on 6 October.

The court decided to release them on 18 October. Three Peace Mothers were released on bail. Adalet Çay will remain under house arrest.

According to Mesopotamia Agency, Hadiye Oğur (49) said that she has been subjected to repeated suffering due to the targeting by the government throughout her life.

Oğur also stated that she had been detained on five occasions merely for calling for peace. She had additionally faced a seven year prison sentence.

“The only demand of the Peace Mothers has been peace”, Oğur said, noting that war must end.

Meyaser Korkmaz (49), another Peace Mother, said that she had been in politics for years.

She stated that the struggle for peace is worthwhile and added that the Peace Mothers’ only demand has been for the termination of the war and the grief that accompanies it. Korkmaz added that she had also been detained three times for requesting peace.
