Iğdır’s trustee in Turkey accused of discrimination

Enver Ünlü, the trustee placed in control of Iğdır (Îdır) municipality in Turkey, has dismissed nine workers and civil servants in the municipality and special provincial administration on the grounds that they are under investigation.

Ünlü, who is also the governor of the city, dismissed Ahmet Dere, İhsan Karadeniz, Mehmet Tan, Cemal Kurnaz (the former fiscal manager of the municipality), Kemal Şahin (the municipality’s lawyer), Deniz Özgür Demir (the municipal police manager), Mehmet Karagün (the former Urban Planning manager), the Deputy Mayor Adem Yaşa and Ali Çekim (the former Chief of the Fire Department).

The Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (HDP’s) Iğdır deputy Habip Eksik stated that the trustee is implementing discriminatory practices on the workers.

Trustees in Turkey

The HDP won 105 municipalities in the local elections on 11 September 2014.

The Turkish Interior Ministry appointed trustees to replace 95 HDP mayors in the municipalities in 2016. The HDP won 65 municipalities at the 31 March 2019 local elections.

However, the trustee appointment policy of the Turkish government continued and HDP elected mayors have been replaced again. Yaşar Akkuş, who was elected HDP mayor of Iğdır (Îdır) municipality, was replaced by the trustee Enver Ünlü.

The number of appointed trustees rose to 52 with the trustee appointment to Kars municipality. The number rose again with the blocking of election certifications and resignations.

A trustee was appointed to the HDP Kars municipality and 19 people were detained in operations that took place on 1 October in Turkey.

After the most recent trustee appointments, the HDP is left in control of just five municipalities in the Kömür district of Adıyaman, the Patnos district of Ağrı (Agirî), the Çınar district of Diyarbakır (Amed) and the Silopi and Balveren districts of Şırnak (Şirnex).
